Artist Statement Criteria
It’s impossible to bring a body of work to its full potential without being able to articulate in words what our photographs say and why they are meaningful to us personally. While not all of our reasons for creating a project are important, having the discussion is a mandatory part of the process in order to create a cohesive and powerful body of work.
An artist statement is A general introduction to your work, a body of work, or a specific project. It should open with the work’s basic ideas in an overview of two or three sentences or a short paragraph.

Artist Statement ExampleSeaside Serenity
Ecola State Park, Cannon Beach, OR This photograph was taken from an iconic viewpoint overlooking of the shoreline of cannon beach. Having seen many inspirational photographs from this area I wanted to capture my own image of the area. I choose this particular viewpoint and composition as I wanted the leading lines of the shoreline to draw the viewers eye along the coastline towards the sea stacks and the haystack Monolith. The viewer should be pleasantly drawn into the image as if being there in person hearing the hypnotic rolling waves in a feeling of serenity. I kept the processing on this image simple only adjusting for highlight and shadow detail and to slight boost in colour. I choose the camera settings based upon my desire to freeze the ocean waves, aperture value for desired depth of field and lens sharpness, and Iso to balance out the desired exposure.
